TURNING DISEASE INTO OPPORTUNITY

As an individual with Type 1 diabetes, I know first-hand the many ups and downs this never-ending disease can throw at you. Setting your alarm at two hour intervals through the night to make sure you don’t “bottom out” and slip into a diabetic coma, having periods of extreme fatigue due to skyrocketing blood sugars just because you are having a stressful day, or the frustration that comes from constantly sticking yourself with syringes every time you eat in an attempt to process food like a “normal” person. It’s mentally and physically taxing on your body day in and day out.
Over the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Bob Johnson, a fellow Type 1 diabetic, and it has been nothing short of an amazing experience. Bob has been diagnosed with the disease for much longer than I have and is what I would consider a veteran of T1D, knowing many more of the everyday struggles and how to approach them. Bob came into Next Level Fitness & Performance looking to improve his overall health, much like everyone else does, but had a different intensity and mindset that I noticed right away. Most notably, instead of being bogged down by the “limitations” that T1D gives him, he looked at it as simply one more obstacle he would learn to overcome.
Fast forward a few months and you’ll find that not only has he gotten back to his athletic roots and excelled in the weight room, Bob has lost more than 3% body fat, uses less insulin to manage his diabetes and most importantly, has improved his quality of life.
I’ve gotten to know Bob well these past months and it’s clear to me that he doesn’t view his disease as a life sentence. Instead, he views it as an opportunity to consistently overcome. He’s positive, ready to work, always brightens my day with a smile and manages to prioritize what really matters. In fact, Bob has helped me to better deal with the emotional struggles of living with a disease for which there is no cure. More importantly, he has taught me to find the opportunity that is hidden in every situation and life event to come out on top and ultimately become a better individual because of it.
I hope Bob’s story will motivate you to come to Next Level and seize your opportunity for a healthier, happier lifestyle. Maybe you’ll see Bob pushing himself to the limit in a strength training session, or a conditioning session, and making the most out of every opportunity. Get close enough and he’ll throw you a fist bump. We should all learn from Bob and take every challenge in life as an opportunity.
Every day clients come to us for help, inspiration, and motivation, but what they often don’t know is that they can inspire us, too. Proud to be your coach, Bob!
